Are you or someone you know in the military? How has being a lesbian affected you
being in the military? It can’t be easy because being gay is your lifestyle, it’s your culture, it’s who you are. If you’re not in the military, could you keep your lifestyle a secret from everybody? Do you think that is respectful to your partner? What if your partner did that to you, how would you feel being kept a secret?
There has been a lot of controversy with the DADT (Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell) Policy, I’ve written in-depth articles about gay military, but I think now more than ever it is a big deal. Not only is it making an impact on the news, but with our community going out and fighting for rights, it is just another right to fight for. There is a crazy amount of people who have been discharged for being gay or suspected of being gay and that is ridiculous. I think anyone who is willing to fight for the rights of America, is a strong-willed and brave individual whether they are gay or not. I just know that the policy is so blown out of proportion that it is becoming almost stupid. Who cares who you’re with? What does that have to do with being dedicated to freedom of Americans? Gay people go through the same relationship issues as straight people, so maybe everyone should just be single going into the military.
Having to keep your partner secret can be stressful on you and your partner. It’s not fair to either one of you. It will make your partner feel obsolete and disrespected. You have to understand where she is coming from, however, if and only if you are in the military, would it be okay to keep your partner secret, and only if you are keeping her secret from your superiors in the military. There is no other reason in my book to keep your lover secret, not even if you haven’t came out yet. And if that is the case then you can introduce her as your friend and no harm no foul.
Coming out to your family and the public is a whole other ball game and we will explore some steps that will help cushion that adventure in the near future.
Tell me your thoughts on the policy and who it has effected your life. I am interested!
